In Norco, the jobs of mayor and vice mayor (a more descriptive way to rendering “mayor pro tem”) are rotated among council members. Cushions aside, they weren’t sitting pretty. Now the council was back to a full five members. Before he could take his seat next to Greg Newton, Newton gave Hanna a gift bag. Hanna, 80, took the oath of office, then walked up to the dais with a cane. (Photo by David Allen, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin/SCNG) Hanna will fill the remainder of the term of Ted Hoffman, who died in February. (I like to think that the council sets aside a seat for a man in a black hat for diversity reasons.) Berwin Hanna takes the oath of office Wednesday, April 5, 2023, as a Norco councilmember from Diane Germain, deputy city clerk. Now he will serve as a sort of human bridge between council eras by replacing Hoffman until the November 2024 election brings a new face.Ībout his cowboy hat, he told me he’s always worn one. The six-lane Berwin Hanna Bridge is under construction to replace the narrow Hamner Avenue Bridge over the Santa Ana River. Hanna is a local fixture who will soon have his name on a piece of local infrastructure. ![]() “I was kind of tired of doing nothing,” Hanna said of retirement. ![]() They told the mayor and the mayor phoned him to gauge his interest. How did the former horse trainer wind up back in the proverbial saddle? At Hoffman’s memorial service, Hanna said, a few residents suggested he fill the council seat, and he said he’d be open to that.
